Although I'd place Anything Else on another plane from the other two films you mention: Small Time Crooks is an amusing light comedy, fairly minor, while Cassandra's Dream, though certainly interesting on its own merits, I thought returned one time too many to the well of murder/guilt/conscience that had previously played out in Crimes and Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-76767543899335890882009-09-07T22:15:00.072-04:002009-09-07T22:15:00.072-04:00What an underrated gem, really... I'm totally agreed that this film is very realistic in many ways, and I think Woody writes very convincingly for the young -- one would never know it from the ludicrous "punk" son in Hollywood Ending but here he seems to really understand and care about his characters.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-27006742966450105942009-03-23T15:23:00.000-04:002009-03-23T15:23:00.000-04:00I have to add that this is the best review of "Any...I have to add that this is the best review of "Anything Else" I've come across, even topping Ebert's very positive (albeit 3 star) review from the time of the film's release.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-89873050446539035282009-03-23T15:18:00.000-04:002009-03-23T15:18:00.000-04:00When Biggs looks to the camera and says, "I'd rath...When Biggs looks to the camera and says, "I'd rather eat rat poison than sit on a beach listening to this guy play a guitar at 3 AM in the morning," I very nearly applauded, having been in this same exact situation a few times before.

I loved "Anything Else," and it wraps itself up like a great short story. A lot of Woody's films seem to have this curve of acceptance where it takes a while for the initial hatred to cool off and the film's admirers to start stepping forward. I don't know if I'll ever get to that point with Scorpion or Hollywood Ending (though even Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-42570379709439314952009-03-23T10:26:00.000-04:002009-03-23T10:26:00.000-04:00agreed! this is a film that WILL be feted, one day...agreed! this is a film that WILL be feted, one day!

I have a lot more affection for SCORPION and HOLLYWOOD ENDING than you do (for some reason, after hating these in the theatre--I found myself really giving in to the hypnotism and psychosomatic blindness gags in these films, on DVD... plus the 40s atmosphere in the former is perfect, and so is Tea Leoni, in the latter), but ANYTHING Expos 1983 Blog https://www.blogger.com/profile/10798243137456349089noreply@blogger.com
