Yeah, though there's a level of meta commentary here, as with many of his films, for the most part this one remains focused on narrative and character and dialogue rather than drawing a lot of attention to the formal framework.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-26173854895786876072012-03-07T14:05:30.869-05:002012-03-07T14:05:30.869-05:00Thanks a lot, Sam. Agreed that the formal device is pretty simple in itself and not necessarily unique to this film, but the rigorous way in which Kiarostami uses it here is extraordinary.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-23820100082758017762012-03-07T10:41:26.371-05:002012-03-07T10:41:26.371-05:00Yes, it most certainly is an exceptional film, one...Yes, it most certainly is an exceptional film, one of the director's finest, and as captivating a look into the sociological moorings of Iranian society as any other work. The device used her is not new (we saw it used by Kiaromstami in his previous A TASTE OF CHERRY and by Jarmusch and others) but it's unique in the all-encompassing manner in which it's presented here. I applaud Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-75112309592726922892012-03-06T13:31:21.455-05:002012-03-06T13:31:21.455-05:00Thanks, Vidal. There are so many layers and so many ideas within this deceptively basic framework.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-54092931023957961362012-03-06T12:34:56.967-05:002012-03-06T12:34:56.967-05:00Excellent write-up, Ed. It just impresses me how much is expressed with so little; a fine example of why more cinematic and editing techniques are not necessary in order to make a film "say" something.vidalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05233639891382103355noreply@blogger.com
