Although I have sort of a radical taste in Hawks' films so I might not be the most trustworthy critic of his stuff (I think Land of the Pharaohs is better than Hatari!, for example), but this movie really does gleefully play on Hawks' earlier movies. You mentioned Adam Zanziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14524618281515322239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-21452906110393680032010-01-07T14:35:59.836-05:002010-01-07T14:35:59.836-05:00I have bestowed upon you an award.

I may even prefer this film slightly to Rio Bravo, since it's a further development of the ideas about narrative slackening that Hawks explored in that one. It's pretty much a toss-up between the two, though.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-2191392850320787252010-01-06T11:29:11.042-05:002010-01-06T11:29:11.042-05:00I love El Dorado. I feel like it is slightly underrated because it stands in the shadow of Rio Bravo, but I prefer Mitchum to Martin as well.Doniphonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02407443845368110678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-56587457147704199472010-01-06T10:28:24.351-05:002010-01-06T10:28:24.351-05:00I wrote an article about El Dorado when it came ou...I wrote an article about El Dorado when it came out back in 1967 for a long-defunct little mag called "Medium." Everything you say about it is quite true, and highlights the essence of Hawks' style. It's that stylistic looseness that most impressed the French -- particularly Rivette -- about his work.DavidEhrensteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11016905507543736049noreply@blogger.com
