It's a mess and there are so many distractingly bad moments, but there are ideas, images, little moments and sequences, that are compelling in exactly the way you describe, as this pastiche of pulp nostalgia. It doesn't really work as a whole but there's some good stuff here at least.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-8698593139182318982012-02-15T17:13:43.793-05:002012-02-15T17:13:43.793-05:00I was so infuriated by the gophers, I didn't e...I was so infuriated by the gophers, I didn't even notice how awkward the entire fridge moment was. Then came the monkeys and the CGI bugs, and I was done and done. But a few months ago, in a spasm of stock-taking, I watched it again. It's still a mess, but I was able to see it more for what it was *to me*... a keen throwback to the old 50s sci-fi movies I soaked in on Saturday Roberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10667380722587782819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-49986684759129739322012-02-10T16:04:57.845-05:002012-02-10T16:04:57.845-05:00I agree, Troy, the ideas had a lot of promise, and...I agree, Troy, the ideas had a lot of promise, and to some extent they do explore all that Cold War era subtext in places, but mostly it's a real missed opportunity. And you're right, at times it feels a lot more like Lucas than like Spielberg, especially in the goofier CGI moments.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-62341079614566135702012-02-10T12:18:17.418-05:002012-02-10T12:18:17.418-05:00There was so much they could have done with the id...There was so much they could have done with the idea of the old Indy and him becoming a relic and a man out of time, that it's too bad THIS was the best they could come up with.

I'm not sure who to blame most -- Spielberg and Ford don't seem to be putting in the effort, LaBeouf is miscast and out-of-place, and the general stench of Lucas is all over the thing unlike in any Troy Olsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14843741571724231174noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-34612781630998836112012-02-10T00:44:35.615-05:002012-02-10T00:44:35.615-05:00Yeah, all the exposition is deadly boring. Really, refrigerator aside, the best part of the movie is the first act, with the undertones of nuclear hysteria and Red Fever, the most interesting aspects of the film, and of course aspects that are pretty anemically developed once Indy and Mutt actually Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-23867394978546582382012-02-09T18:10:36.277-05:002012-02-09T18:10:36.277-05:00It's not entirely the dismal failure it's ...It's not entirely the dismal failure it's said to be; it's deeply flawed but also strangely fascinating.

My sentiments exactly. KOTCS does have a lot of problems, but I've always been strangely drawn to it. It's often lampooned as one of Spielberg's weakest films, and it may very well could be, but overall it has a sense of cheer and boyish mayhem that I Adam Zanziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14524618281515322239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-53008875775558569232012-02-09T15:04:07.474-05:002012-02-09T15:04:07.474-05:00Well, I mean, I don't really like it much eith...Well, I mean, I don't really like it much either. It has its moments of weird interest, but on the whole it's definitely silly, and usually not in a good way (the refrigerator, Shia as Tarzan of the apes). Not a big fan of the Blanchett character either, she's even more of a cartoon than the Nazis in previous Indy films.

Still, I do love that ridiculous image of Indy in Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3296479421292377391.post-76057816890006687312012-02-09T14:38:30.114-05:002012-02-09T14:38:30.114-05:00Well I'm sorry but I don't.
