But it also adds by further theatricalizing everything, or at least, by reminding you - not that there aren't plenty of reminders in the performances alone - that you're watching "performance." I'd call it a distancing effect if it weren't so endearing. I mentioned how Jean Wiener shows up occasionally in the background, and that's because he was actually there, playing the music. Rivette was experimenting with this kind of stuff back when he made this film. I had the impression watching (and listening to) the film, that all of the music may have been "live." You mention the point where one of the actors seems distracted by the piano cue.
