The Best Albums of the 2000s: Coming on Monday

This is just a programming note to provide some advance notice: next week, from Monday through Thursday, I will posting a list of the best 200 albums of the last decade, 50 albums at a time. I've been working on this project for a long time (as evidenced by how late it is after most people have done these kinds of round-ups!). I've written brief blurbs for each album, so I hope people will stop by, take a look, and offer up their own recommendations and commentary on my selections. It's a fairly diverse list, I think, and one that's probably destined to fully satisfy nobody but me — but I hope it'll at least trigger some discussion and maybe point some readers towards a few albums that I consider the absolute peak of recent music.

So come back on Monday to check out the first 50 albums in the list, for numbers 200 through 151, along with my proper introduction to the project.

Good! That's the way music should be. I can't wait to see this list, Ed, as I'm always looking for new music ideas. I don't think I could do a project this big because about five years ago i gave up on expanding my musical taste, so my list would essentially just consist of the same bands over and over.

Anywho...can't wait to see the list.

I should add that about five years ago I gave up expanding my musical taste with my own efforts...I always ask people for good music ideas, hence why I'm excited for this list. I just re-read my comment and that sounded really confusing. So there ya go.

This is pretty exciting, Ed. Every time I've glance at your 'Recent Listening' section, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that it seems like we listen to a lot of the same stuff (Mountain Goats, Hecker, Autechre, etc. etc.), however I haven't been able to listen to nearly as much as I'd like to this decade, so I greatly anticipate some exciting new albums from your list to discover. Really looking forward to this.

Thanks, guys. I'm hoping people will join in with comments and suggestions, so I can get some additional recommendations of my own. So I'll see you back here on Monday!

Looking forward to it, I think our tastes align pretty regularly music-wise.

Whoa!!! I can see this is going to be huge! Awesome work.

And the new theme looks good (although it will take some time for me to get used it).

That's great to hear, Ed! I was actually recently thinking of starting a personal canon of favorite records on my blog, to expand it past cinema. It's nice to see film bloggers reaching out to their other interests. I'm a huge fan of the current musical landscape, so I can't wait to read it.

Thanks everyone. Look for the first part of the list early tomorrow. And look for Soulja Boy... on, uh, someone else's list. Heh.
